Children and young people are reading fewer books than ever before in the UK. In 2019, a mere 25.8 percent of children said they spent time reading each day, which is the lowest level ever recorded by the National Literacy Trust (NLT). Public libraries have traditionally helped support child literacy. However, libraries are increasingly viewed as cold, fusty and boring with strict rules about staying silent. We set out to change this perception through encouraging kids to read aloud in public libraries and, in doing so, remind them how thrilling reading can be.
