World Record Pacific Ocean Row

Story Shop

Client: The Maclean Brothers

Story Shop turned a remote ocean rowing challenge into a global fundraising movement, raising £1,027,727 and delivering clean water to 40,000 people in Madagascar, on a budget of just £36,000 with zero paid media. The brief was to help The Maclean Brothers achieve a £1 million target while overcoming the “media black hole” that typically limits long-distance endurance campaigns. Our approach was to transform the expedition into a sustained storytelling platform - engineering news, not simply documenting the journey. We built a live international newsroom, using satellite communications to direct content in real time and turn the boat into a rolling global media asset. The campaign was structured across three phases: Foundation, The Row, and The Hard Ask, ensuring continuous narrative momentum across 139 days. Crucially, we reframed the story beyond extreme sport. By centring the brothers’ tribute to their late sister, we unlocked a powerful emotional narrative that resonated with mainstream audiences. Social listening revealed a key demographic, “worried mothers”, prompting a strategic pivot towards family-led storytelling, amplified through partnerships including Lorraine Kelly. Fundraising was treated as a performance discipline. Donation appeals were strategically deployed at peak media moments, maximising conversion without audience fatigue. The campaign delivered over 2,400 pieces of coverage, 1.96 billion reach, and 50 million social views. One TV appearance alone generated £20,000 in ten minutes. This campaign demonstrates how earned-first thinking, emotional precision, and strategic restraint can drive extraordinary not-for-profit impact, turning attention into action at global scale.
